Professional Communication Skills Workshop
Professional communication encompasses the exchange of information and ideas in a business or formal setting that aims to achieve specific goals. This includes verbal and written communication in a variety of formats and contexts, including email, meetings, presentations, and phone calls. Effective professional communication is clear and audience-focused, ensuring that messages are understood and lead to desired outcomes. It also demonstrates professionalism, respect, and cultural sensitivity.
Wavelength training programs participants develop a personal action plan for improving their written and verbal communication skills in the workplace. They then discuss and share their plans in small groups.
To encourage sharing, ask each participant to consider a significant communication experience and talk about it with another participant. This is a great way to foster the sharing of diverse experiences and help learners appreciate that everyone has different needs and communication styles.
Then, present a framework (CRATE) for planning messages that are clear, relevant, authentic, transparent, and empathetic to ensure shared understanding. Highlight behaviors to adopt and avoid, such as speaking more slowly and clearly, avoiding non-verbal cues that signal closed offness, and using active listening techniques. Emphasize that goals, roles, and tasks need to be fully understood for effective communication.
Presenters often feel nervous about their ability to communicate effectively in front of others. This is why it’s important to take the time to practice and prepare for upcoming presentations. It’s also helpful to have a good understanding of the impact of body language and non-verbal cues on audience response.
