The Importance of Quality Insulation

Metal building insulation is an integral component of a well-designed building, and can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs. High-quality insulation prevents heat loss during the winter and keeps warm air from entering the building during the summer, reducing reliance on artificial means of heating and cooling. Insulation is also effective at preventing drafts and maintaining a consistent indoor temperature.

However, insulation’s effectiveness is largely dependent on how it is installed. That’s why a QII inspection is essential to ensure that the insulation in your home or commercial space is correctly installed, maximizing its benefits.

When performed correctly, QII can result in significant energy savings and enhanced comfort levels. This helps reduce environmental impacts and contributes to a sustainable living environment.

A QII inspection includes a thorough assessment of the installation of the insulation in a new building or renovation, usually performed at strategic points in the construction process (pre-drywall and after the walls are closed up). During the inspection, an inspector checks for gaps, voids, and compression, ensuring that the insulation is properly fitted in all areas, including corners and hard-to-reach places.

The proposed 2019 effort will make QII part of the prescriptive package and remove it as a compliance credit for all climate zones, except low-rise multifamily buildings in Climate Zone 7. Including QII in the code changes will allow more builders to verify that their wall and attic insulation is installed according to industry standards, and maximizes the U-factor of these envelope assemblies.
